In this week’s podcast, we go casual. Perhaps too casual. Here are excerpts from a conversation MK Czerwiec & Ian Williams had with Professor Mita Mahato from the University of Puget Sound in March.
Enjoy (or please forgive) what Ian refers to as “naff background music” and other assorted restaurant noises. The conversation is set over dessert in a villa of Chicago’s legendary Italian Village Restaurant, open since 1927. Also requiring forgiveness will be my inappropriate interviewer technique, which includes talking with my mouth full, interjecting my own enthusiasm about school supplies, and cracking ridiculous jokes.
Mita, always the professional, saves the podcast as she discusses teaching comics (specifically in the context of a visual rhetoric course) her experiences with embracing creative work through Graphic Medicine. Finally, she shares her thoughts on the future of the Graphic Medicine movement.
Mita will be presenting “Signs of life: Framing terminal illness, death and grief through comics” at the 2012 Comics & Medicine conference in Toronto this July.
