This comic was created by Khorizon Dunn for MK Czerwiec’s Spring 2024 course titled “Special Topics in Biomedical Visualization: Graphic Medicine” for the University of Illinois at Chicago. See full creator bio at the end of the comic.

Creator bio: From middle school with comics doodled in the margins of notebook paper during class to a medical illustration internship during high school, a BSc in Interdisciplinary Studies, and an MS in Biomedical Visualization, Khorizon Dunn has accumulated valuable experience with bringing a wide range of people’s voices and stories to the spotlight. A medical illustrator from the Atlanta suburbs, they use engaging and educational narratives (like comics) to bridge the gap between health care fields and under-represented patients. To increase both representation and positive health outcomes for historically underserved populations, Khorizon combines graphic design skills, illustration techniques, and narrative storytelling ability with their comprehensive anatomical and artistic knowledge.

Focusing on humanizing and normalizing people who are historically othered, Khorizon has even led a research project on liver disease signs in darker skin tones, showcasing the voice of a simulated dark-skinned patient in an e-learning module designed to educate medical students. In addition to this e-learning module highlighting the significance of representation in medical education materials, Khorizon’s work has also been published in multiple scientific journals.
