After several years of work and unavoidable delays, I am thrilled to announce the launch of Essential Graphic Medicine: An Annotated Bibliography!
Funded by an ALA Carnegie-Whitney grant, which supports the preparation and publication of reading lists and other bibliographical aids, Alice Jaggers and I have been developing this tool since early 2018 as a way to aid library workers in the development of graphic medicine collections. For library folks new to the idea of comics, much less graphic medicine, it can be difficult to know where to begin and what might be considered important early titles for a collection – this set of 30 comics can alleviate some of that difficulty. These are titles that come graphic medicine community recommended and can help determine the viability of a collection in a library’s local community.
You can find the bibliography and more details about our process on the Essential Graphic Medicine page using either the link above, below, or by navigating to the “Resources” tab on the home page of this website and selecting the bibliography from the drop-down menu. On that page, you’ll also find a downloadable PDF version that you can readily share with colleagues (it is email size limit friendly).
Please check it out and share with the library workers in your life!

Thank you for giving us another excellent resource!
