The team from the University of Birmingham “Histories of Sexual Health in Britain” project is looking for artists to help with a new graphic novel. Read below for more information on the project and their needs, and please feel free to share with creatives in the Graphic Medicine community!

We are seeking a graphic novelist to collaborate with a team of historians at the University of Birmingham, UK, on the development, design and production of a graphic novel about ordinary people in British venereal disease clinics during the mid-twentieth century. The novel will be based on oral histories and archival research that has been collected as part of the UKRI-funded project “Histories of Sexual Health in Britain, 1918-1980.”
Our hope is that the development of this graphic novel will be a collaborative process in which the history team uses their research and expertise to work with a graphic novelist to develop a script and illustrations. We are aiming for a novel of approximately 180 to 200 pages, to be published in print (and possibly in digital format). We are open to illustrations being either in black and white or colour. Our hope is to have a complete manuscript ready for submission to a publisher by the end of 2029.
Rates for this project will be set in accordance with Artists’ Union England guidance.
While it is desirable that the graphic novelist has experience working with historical materials and subject matter, it is not an essential requirement.
