How to Write a Review for GraphicMedicine.org

I don’t have specific rules about reviews but general ones. I’m very flexible. I suggest a review be 400 words or more (though it could be less if you really don’t have much to write about … but you should explain why you don’t have much to write). Spend some time on the medical issues addressed in the graphic work and how well that’s done (Do you understand it? Does the GM book under review include references/resources? Terminology explained? Any triggers that might be of concern? Etc.). Who’s the audience for the GM work (general, providers, patients, students, educators, kids, etc.)? Discuss how it was presented, including the illustrations. Are there any other topics you want to address (metaphors, themes, etc.)? I tend to use some statistics from reliable sources (e.g., .gov or .edu weblink) on the medical issues, but that’s me. Address any or all of my suggested topics; whatever is meaningful to you. I may have some edits which you’ll have the chance to approve.

If you don’t have the book you want to review, a good source of used books is www.abebooks.com. Sometimes we get review copies from the publisher, so ask first. I don’t give deadlines (unless you want one) because I know you’re a volunteer and we all have busy schedules. I do follow up in a month or two; just to find out if you still plan on doing the review. There’s some specific stuff at the beginning of every review (book cover image, title, author, ISBN, and some other items) which I can add.
