Our guest host for Drawing Together #42 was Liz Argall. Liz is an Australian cartoonist, game designer and author based in Seattle. In the world of comics, she’s been a script writer, artist talent scout, worked with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities to create social message comics (with topics as diverse as Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, end of life planning and sustainable hunting practices.) Liz creates the webcomic Thingswithout.com. She’s a professional member of SFWA, graduate of Clarion Writers Workshop and has been an Associate Artist in Residence at the Atlantic Center for the Arts.
Liz began our session by generously sharing her comics history. And then she lays out our workshop plan.
Here is the warmup exercise:
- Write down 7 things you have done in the last 24 hours while playing this song:
2. Now write down 7 things you have heard in the last 24 hours while playing this song:
3. Now, in 30 seconds, write down something you heard someone say in the last 24 hours. This can include things heard on TV, radio, YouTube, streaming, etc.
4. Now, in 30 seconds, write down a “Question about the day” – something you are wondering, something provoked by your journaling, something you are curious about, this is an open-ended response.
For the next section of the workshop, you will be using a single sheet of printer paper.
