The Drawing Together community convened on Sunday, May 30th. Our host was Zara Slattery. Zara is a comics creator, illustrator, and tutor. Her debut graphic novel, Coma, published by Myriad Editions, is a memoir depicting the internal journey of her drug-induced coma. You can read a BBC story about the book here, and listen to a fascinating conversation about the book here.
Our warmup exercise came via Judith Margolis: Draw a role you’d like to have in your next life.

Then ask yourself: what part of this desire can I bring into this current life?
Zara Slattery then led us through the following main exercise:
- Draw a bean as a character- any kind of bean – navy, string, kidney, black, whatever suits your fancy. Have fun with it.
- Separate from that, name four emotions you experienced on a recent journey – large scale or small – a long period or a part of a day. Whatever comes to mind.
- Then make four panels on your page, and have your bean character embody each of the four emotions.
- Finally, draw a map of the journey, with your bean experiencing those emotions along the route.

Our custom playlist created by Zara for this session. Play it while you draw too!
NOTE: The Drawing Together steering committee has decided to return to monthly meetings for the summer of 2021. Stay tuned for more information on upcoming sessions.
