Sharing news of an upcoming event that may interest the Graphic Medicine community: The University of North Dakota is hosting a new book talk, “Keywords/Keyimages in Graphic Medicine,” on Tuesday, April 22, 12pm-1:30pm CT.
In this talk, Lisa Diedrich and Briana Martino introduce and reflect on the field of graphic medicine through a discussion of their forthcoming edited collection, Keywords/Keyimages in Graphic Medicine. Diedrich and Martino have coined the term keywords/keyimages to capture what is unique about the comics form. The book includes contributions from comics artists, scholars, and health practitioners. The interdisciplinary and multimodal project shows how graphic medicine bridges academia’s siloed medical and liberal arts campuses. Thus, the book provides a resource for teaching and research in many fields: medicine, nursing, and other allied health professions, medical and health humanities, disability studies, art, visual cultural studies, media and communication studies, and comics studies.

This event offers a fascinating exploration into how keywords and key images function within graphic medicine. It’s enlightening to see how visual storytelling can enhance our understanding of healthcare narratives. Highly recommend for anyone interested in the intersection of comics and medicine!
Really intriguing topic! The way graphic medicine intersects with visual literacy and narrative frameworks is something I’ve always found powerful. Looking forward to hearing how “keyimages” shape meaning in patient experiences.
