A couple of months ago I heard a talk given by a comics artist who goes under the name of Una. One of her projects is a comic about dealing with psychosis in a relative, including being with them while they undergo the process of being detained under the mental health act. The series is in development and will be launched as a comic book at an exhibition in Leeds in February http://www.leeds-artexhibitions.co.uk
Here is a sneak preview:

I’m keen to see this comic. Unfortunately, involuntary admission becomes necessary when things get hazardous but it’s usually a miserable business that ignites great fear and intense conflict. My experience as a psychiatrist is that the eventual outcome is often quite good or, at least, better than what could have happened without admission.
The graphics shown are very powerful and I’m looking forward to seeing them in the context of the comic. Neil
Thanks for your comment Neil, it’s encouraging that you like it. I’m still working on the text for this comic but I hope to have it finished and on sale at my show in Leeds in February along with other work. However if you drop me a line at una.comics@yahoo.co.uk I can post you one when it’s done.
PS My mother’s outcome was indeed better than it would have been without admission, in fact she’s fairly well now.
