In this wonderful second episode of interviews from our Ireland conference, Christopher Dwyer speaks with Catherine Gouge and KC Councilor about their workshop on “Redo Comics.”
Coincidentally, Catherine just hosted our October Drawing Together, so you can put their method to work. That Drawing Together session can be accessed here.
KC Councilor is a cartoonist and communication professor at Southern Connecticut State University. Many of his comics are about being a trans person in the world and, more recently, about becoming a dad. You can see more of his work and get a copy of his 2019 book Between You and Me: Transitional Comics at www.kccouncilor.com. Be sure to check out the terrific video about his work with another former DT host, Lynda Barry.
Catherine Gouge is a writing professor in the English Department at West Virginia University who started and now coordinates a Medical Humanities Minor for the college of arts and sciences. She is currently studying empathy in pre-surgical communication with doctors at WVU Medicine and has published extensively about the value of paying attention to the “divergent” (or so-called non-compliant) behaviors of patients and caregivers. This work has appeared in several books and journals.

Our podcast host, Christopher Dwyer, is a psychology researcher who specializes in the fields of cognition and education, with international expertise in the field of Critical Thinking. He is the author of the book Critical Thinking: Historical Perspectives & Practical Guidelines, published by Cambridge University Press. He authors an ongoing blog for Psychology Today, Thoughts on Thinking. Follow Dr. Dwyer on Twitter, @CogitoErgoDwyer.

GMIC would like to thank the 2024 Athlone Graphic Medicine conference team for making the conference and these podcast episodes possible, especially Dr. Dwyer, podcast team chair Laura Rooney Ferris, Trinity College Dublin, and conference organizer Jane Burns.
