Tribute to Rinko Endo

At the second Graphic Medicine conference, a recent graduate of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Rinko Endo, presented her Aggression Management Manga. She had created the manga specifically for the conference, as well as to be used as an educational intervention in her workplace. Her manga demonstrated an adorable self-effacing humor and educational power that blew those in attendance – all of whom received their own copy – away. She also provided our favorite quote about the 2011 event, calling it, “The coolest conference on earth.”  Rinko went on to make more graphic medicine manga and continue to cheerlead graphic medicine’s efforts at every opportunity.

We learned this past week that Rinko, who had moved back to Japan with her husband Chris, has died. The hearts of those of us who were lucky enough to know Rinko are heavy with grief. We send our condolences to her family and friends. Rinko was indeed one of a kind and will not be forgotten. You can read her obituary in the Chicago Tribune here.
