This spotlight features an original research article sparked by a desire to justify the creation of a graphic medicine collection at an academic health sciences library. Faced with a format that was new to our library and a noticeable gap in the literature, we rolled up our sleeves and dug into the data to explore how academic health sciences libraries were curating graphic medicine. Armed with online catalogs, data collection tools, and a shared love of comics in healthcare, we became the Librarian League!

Our article, Graphic Medicine in Academic Health Science Library Collections, is the result of that collaboration. It’s the first study to take a large-scale look at 125 academic health sciences library catalogs to offer a large-scale overview of the prevalence and accessibility of graphic medicine materials, establishing a foundation for future collection development research. We discovered that librarians are supporting the growing interest in the comic art format by incorporating graphic medicine into their collections and providing educational uses and examples through LibGuides.
This research helped us make the case to establish a graphic medicine collection in our library and we hope that it will inspire more libraries to do the same.
