Emotional Healing; One Comic at a Time
by David Milgrim
It seems like forever since I began my therapeutic quest to feel okay. In the decades since, I’ve become quite familiar with my backstory, but only in the last year have I begun plucking plump fruits off the vines of progress. I feel, at last, that I’ve entered the world that always surrounded me.
It’s this ordinarily magical world of experience and feeling, free of the anxious self-doubt that has over-revved my nervous system since I was an infant, yanking me out of one moment after the next. It’s a world abuzz with tangible, non-groovy energies affecting and connecting us. It’s a world people not riddled with developmental trauma have always naturally inhabited.
One Comic At A Time details how I got my foot in the door of this ongoing human feel-a-thon. My comics and comic essays are a summary of helpful mental health concepts I’ve learned from others, simmered in the sauce of my own understanding. Distilling complexity to its simplest parts is my passion, not just with line and text, but with the most complex issues of humanity.
Life is challenging for everyone. But one of the most liberating fun-facts I’ve uncovered is that it’s not our fault, despite our fears and self-flagellations. We don’t get to choose our parents or our developmental injuries or our parent’s developmental injuries. We certainly don’t get to choose the fact that humans never evolved to live in this sprawling, impossibly modern, hyper-competitive, bat-crap-crazy world.
Our only choice, which we get to make over and over, is how we attempt to meet the monumental challenge of existence. And with whom. Together, not only can we share experience and wisdom, but we can satisfy our fundamental evolutionary drive to feel less alone.
Together, we can build a raft of laughter to keep us afloat through the storms and wild seas.
