Leah Balsan is a medical storyteller currently based in Chicago. As a graduate of the Master of Science in Biological Visualization (BVIS) program at the University of Chicago, combining art and science into comic form just made sense. Her comics generally cover women’s issues in healthcare, although zoonotic diseases have a special place in her heart. She has worked as a frog lab tech, on a bioarchaeology dig site in Blue Creek, Belize, as a COVID-19 disease investigator/contact tracer, a research assistant at the Magee-Women’s Research Institute, and as a storyboard artist, among other things. Her work can be found @lebemedart on Instagram.
This comic was created for MK Czerwiec’s course Special Topics in Biomedical Visualization: Graphic Medicine, University of Illinois at Chicago, Spring 2024.

Very creative approach to a difficult often unmanageable problem
Lots of issues to muse on here
