Our latest Spotlight on projects and people within the Graphic Medicine international community focuses on a new musical imagery project from artist Jim Medway
About the Work

I’ve recently completed a set of illustrations and short sequential illustrations commissioned by music psychologist Dr Dawn Rose of Hochschule Lucerne Musik in Switzerland, to complement her Playlist4Parkinson’s initiative. Research has found various positive aspects to the strategy of imagining music to assist with challenges faced by people with Parkinson’s. The images are intended to help interpret and share her research in an accessible non-academic format.
I was asked to address various aspects of the strategy;
- an overview of musical imagery strategy
- motivational uses
- calming and mood management
- walking and pace-setting
- the concept of a personal ‘internal jukebox’
Initial pencil sketches were presented to an international focus group online, who discussed clarity of messaging, particular wording and made suggestions for improvements.

More examples are now on the applied comics page of my website, where you can also find comics created for the University of Manchester School of Health Sciences to welcome and reassure new students and staff, a set for one of their PhD student’s Motor Imagery research.

I hope some of it might be of interest to the Graphic Medicine community! I’m keen to pursue more interpretive work like this, translating research, findings and initiatives into comics and illustrations to assist dissemination and reach.
