Spotlight: Riya Gupta

My name is Riya Gupta, and I am an undergraduate psychology student at NYU, passionate about creating a platform for mental health stories to be shared and appreciated in a raw, vulnerable, and diverse way. As a member of the South Asian community, I have realized how stigmatized the experience of a mental illness is within my community, and one of the reasons I have observed is a lack of understanding or information regarding mental health. Through my comic, I explore borderline personality disorder through Rani’s experience as a young woman unable to cope with her mood swings and establish a secure identity. This comic focuses on the diagnostic criteria of BPD and the importance of the patient-therapist relationship, and making this comic has provided me with an outlet of expression to share with my community.

My online platform, Kali’s Karma, is a creative outlet where I share more mental health resources and discuss my personal experiences. Currently, I am working on designing a comic about psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy as well as a set of mental health cards. That’s great! Also the psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy sounds very interesting. By the way: I wanted to follow you on Instagram, but the link on your site doesn’t seem to work.
