Iwan James is a GP with OCD working in a small country practice dodging the bullets and the craters in the no man’s land between the chemist’s shop and the hospital. He is not a bad doctor,in any sense. He sets himself impossibly high professional standards and works in a society which still needs the benign authoritarian figure of the traditional GP but also takes a cruel, modern delight in their doctors’ frailties. Ian Williams has an uncluttered cartoon format and can capture complex situations in few captions. Although there is a lot of dark stuff in the book there are also some very funny bits . You can’t help liking Dr James, and worrying about him too. He is a corner shop family doctor in a Tescodoc age. Will he be steamrollered into boring ,faceless middle age in a prize-winning Community Wellbeing Centre? My hunch is that he will survive and I hope to read of his further adventures.
