This Week in Graphic Medicine in a Stranger Things Stylized Font

‘This Week in Graphic Medicine’ highlights relevant articles (and tweets) about comics in medicine published during the week (Saturday – Friday). Articles are typically presented without commentary, with credit given to those who flagged them up where possible. So without further ado…

This Week in Graphic Medicine – A Look Inside…

Last week when I announced the move of this blog series to the Graphic Medicine site (ICYMI), I promised to give some insight into how this post comes to be. I came to graphic medicine by accident in grad school when I was supposed to be finding background on radiological imaging. Now here we are a few years later and I still reflect on that story for one major reason: entry into the field is often random or by accident because the information is hard to find. This is less the case now than it used to be as ‘graphic medicine’ becomes more ingrained into the language of comics, but you still often must search far and wide for links like those below. Enter ‘This Week in Graphic Medicine’.

Each week I populate this post in a variety of ways. First, as things come across my desk. I spend a great deal of time on social media and as time goes on, more-and-more folks send me links that might be relevant to the field. Twitter, as you can see given that tweets have their own section, forms the backbone of finding news on graphic medicine. Some of the most insightful ideas from the field I’ve seen come from twitter conversations and I want to make sure they are persevered somehow. You can get a sense of who I follow each week to see these insights from this list. I also encourage folks to tag things #GraphicMedicine as much as possible – it ensures visibility.

I have also set up alerts for key terms in the field through Google and PubMed. This helps streamline the process for finding articles, scholarly or not. These are not foolproof however, as much of the indexing for the field is poor, so I also do manual searches as a final check for the post in both Google, Facebook, Twitter, etc. I make my best effort to not share the same articles/information more than once, except in cases of Calls for Papers and Crowdfunding opportunities that I’m particularly excited about.

All of this said, I am absolutely certain that I miss things each week. So I always ask that if you know something I did miss, pass it along so I can make sure it gets included! As a reminder, these posts will be cross-posted on both Graphic Medicine and The Graphic Librarian throughout October – in November, they will be exclusively on GM.

That’d be my guess. And there are some strictly speaking non-comics that can fit but this stretches too far (IMO).
