‘This Week in Graphic Medicine’ highlights relevant articles (and tweets) about comics in medicine published during the week (Saturday – Friday). Links are typically presented without commentary, unless clarification of relevance is necessary, with credit given to those who flagged them up where possible. So without further ado…
Matthew’s Pick of the Week…
This week, I’m pointing you to a particular comic from The Nib: Refugee to Detainee: How the U.S. is Deporting Those Seeking a Safe Haven. This is stretching the traditional definition of medicine or health to include human rights, but it is precisely the human rights element that force me to pick this as a highlight. Because this blog series is meant to showcase the work of graphic medicine – and my thoughts are QUITE clear if you follow me on Twitter – I’ll leave it at this:
We cannot turn away from this issue. These are human beings, whose health – whose very being – is on the line. If that isn’t a matter for medicine, I don’t know what is.

Looking at the book they’ve highlighted https://t.co/Eh9gwR9Z4H I’m thinking what might be appropriate as a first steps would be a workbook of teaching exercises for a range of age groups. I could see that being VERY handy at this point in developing #GraphicMedicine as a field.

It’s not easy, but you can choose to distract your mind. Observe and name what’s around you. Use your senses. Speak out loud, if you can. This will change your focus from your thoughts to your surroundings. If you do this long enough, you can ride out feelings of distress. #dbt pic.twitter.com/AJAE2lyWcW
