‘This Week in Graphic Medicine’ highlights relevant articles (and tweets) about comics in medicine published during the week (Saturday – Friday). Links are typically presented without commentary, unless clarification of relevance is necessary, with credit given to those who flagged them up where possible. So without further ado…
Matthew’s Pick of the Week…
This week I continue the trend of pointing to social media by encouraging you to follow along with Lynda Barry’s Tumblr, The Near-Sighted Monkey. Barry is an Associate Professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and is, in my estimation, one of the most lauded people in comics, graphic medicine included. Her book Syllabus has guided many of us in creating comics courses, myself included, and her encouragement to all of us to rediscover drawing is fundamental to discussing reflective cartooning. Her Tumblr is regularly updated with comics by not only Barry, but her students as well – you literally never know what you’ll see next visit and that makes it wonderful.
You may also want to check out the videos (here and here) recently posted here featuring Michael Green and Lynda Barry meant to inspire the joy of creating.

And if your comic is non-fiction, it makes me wonder what other sloppy errors I *can’t* see, like mistakes in the research.

Going to the #doctor may be stressful, especially for #teens who may feel self conscious or anxious. If we keep that in mind as we engage them in their #healthcare, we may find ways to defuse the tension. #Graphicmedicine #communication pic.twitter.com/n15X0OoL9b

I’m attending #sslbc2018 today and our first speaker is discussing the pitfalls of visuals – primarily that people are less skeptical with them. #GraphicMedicine folks should pay attention to this – we’re obligated to be, perhaps, MORE careful than traditional print materials.

#medlibs and #SLAers: I have a colleague in #graphicmedicine who would love outdated medical texts for various projects. Is there any kind of database that exists? Or list-serv? Or hashtag? Alternatively, is anyone weeding & wants to pass some on? #iamalibrarian

PART 1: I wish more #therapists appreciated how hard it can be to challenge internalised punitive voices. It’s not just about ‘fear of change’ but a real fear from past trauma. I need help every step of the way bc my reaction is so severe. Short course group therapy isn’t enough. pic.twitter.com/fED9cfc3L6

PART 2: We use imagery in #schematherapy to help my little side find ways to feel safer when doing scary things like challenging #mindmonsters pic.twitter.com/tpre8od3nK

@ellen_forney is currently launching her “Rock Steady: Brilliant Advice from My Bipolar Life!”. For a wide range of issues on mental health there is a lot of small press you’ll probably be able to find on @GraphicMedicine‘s feed & website.

Would anyone have any recommendations of comics about anxiety/depression/mental health or just about life in general. Autobiographical preferably! Would love to buy/order some in the future.

This book discusses suicide, so *content warning* – its in the preview of the book.
I will admit that is what convinced me to back this. I am forever interested in the way it is portrayed in comics (future #GraphicMedicine project for me).

Other than Billy, Me, & You (https://t.co/jSEc7nfOAu), I am at a loss for examples of heart conditions in #GraphicMedicine. I know it is a pretty sparse area for the field, but surely someone knows of others I’ve missed.
Help me out!
— Matthew Noe (@NoetheMatt) June 5, 2018
Really it’s about trauma and grief, but cardiac surgery is the major medical event I thought.
I don’t know why I forgot about Hole in the Heart. I think I always think about it in terms of Down syndrome and get stuck there.
— Matthew Noe (@NoetheMatt) June 5, 2018
Yes, same in Spanish, although there are even more thin areas; there are about a hundred graphic pathographies in spanish. I am sure the number for english ones is higher.
