This Week in Graphic Medicine in a Stranger Things Stylized Font

‘This Week in Graphic Medicine’ highlights relevant articles (and tweets) about comics in medicine published during the week (Saturday – Friday). Links are typically presented without commentary, unless clarification of relevance is necessary, with credit given to those who flagged them up where possible. So without further ado…

Matthew’s Pick of the Week…

I’ve had a strange week, interrupted by a 2nd nor’easter in as many weeks and a disjointed work schedule. Because of that, I must apologize and admit there just isn’t time for a long post for my pick of the week. That said, I will use this space to let you know clearly that the NIH Recording of A Conversation about Graphic Medicine is available! In case you missed something, just want to revisit, or didn’t get a chance to view it at all, you can now watch it (or re-watch it) whenever you like.

I also want to say that if you only read one link from this week’s post, it should be the Sugarland webcomic. Given how high the incidence of diabetes – of all types – is in the Western world, we really have a lack of these stories in graphic medicine and this one addresses so many of the issues it’s amazing. Diabetes is one of those illnesses – like lung cancer or HIV – that comes with so much culturally allowed stigma (the YOU BROUGHT IT UPON YOURSELF brigade…) that we need as many firsthand perspectives as possible.

Easy to record good conversations. Yesterday was awsome! You touched some of the issues I am concerned about. What is graphic medicine and does it matter? And how do we prove it works and/or helps? Amazed by your research!!

More bluntly: it is difficult to tease out the effectiveness (or value) of the comic itself as a tool when it is part of a whole slew of interventions. And #GraphicMedicine *desperately* needs that evidence.

— Matthew Noe (@NoetheMatt) March 5, 2018

I love this! Aesthetically, it’s lovely. Representationally, it’s what it feels like inside. @lsmisemer @GraphicMedicine @CtrForEndoCare #EndometriosisAwareness Please send more #endoart!!! ? https://t.co/0lby1uV5d4

I’m thrilled to be part of the Graphic Medicine traveling exhibition that’s currently making the rounds. The lovely @ellen_forney put my work in the exhibit and it’s making the rounds for the next couple of years. https://t.co/ooW6lnpY2z

it’s a really great exhibit of how comics showcase various aspects of mental and physical health. I’d highly recommend taking a look if you’re a teacher and trying to get kids interested in health/medicine or just comics. here’s a great news clip: https://t.co/qMUIdZkV0P

Is This What Depression Looks Like? is the latest in the Annals of @GraphicMedicine by @DoanWjd1. I am always blown away by Bill’s work and this is no exception. They always have the feeling of somehow reading a fading watercolor tattoo in the best way. https://t.co/y6xSwLunRV

I know this is “librarian taboo”, but I could use some help from the #GraphicMedicine community (or anyone): I have a list of citations that I can’t find full text access to. I’ve tried 4 major institutions and ILL (US-limited).

If you might be able to help get access, DM me!
