‘This Week in Graphic Medicine’ highlights relevant articles (and tweets) about comics in medicine published during the week (Saturday – Friday). Links are typically presented without commentary, unless clarification of relevance is necessary, with credit given to those who flagged them up where possible. So without further ado…
Matthew’s Pick of the Week…
My pick this week will be short, but made me smile so much I couldn’t help but highlight it. When I posted a link you’ll see below from Public Libraries Online to the ALA Graphic Novels & Comics in Libraries MIG, a student – Joy Bancroft – replied and shared that they, and some classmates, created a pathfinder (essentially a bibliography meant to aid in the beginnings of research on a particular topic) on Health Care in Graphic Novels! This is an assignment nearly every library science student will have done at some point, but this example is particularly well-done (better than mine in grad school, that’s for certain). In many ways, it mirrors the efforts of this very Graphic Medicine site, but the nature of a pathfinder narrows the scope to a manageable, introductory level – perfect for sharing with those just beginning their foray into the field.
You’ll find on their pathfinder a home page with book covers linking to reviews, a “Topics” menu that allows you to narrow down your search, and finally, a “Research” menu with links to websites, scholarly work, and news relevant to beginning an exploration of graphic medicine. Take a look – and consider sharing with your students!
*Special thanks to Joy for giving me permission to share this.
