This Week in Graphic Medicine in a Stranger Things Stylized Font
‘This Week in Graphic Medicine’ highlights relevant articles (and tweets) about comics in medicine published during the week (Saturday – Friday). Links are typically presented without commentary, unless clarification of relevance is necessary, with credit given to those who flagged them up where possible. So without further ado…

Matthew’s Pick of the Week…

This week, rather than highlight a particular work, I want to provide some suggestions on where you might publish your work – in particular, works of graphic art in the scholarly realm. I get this question quite often, and I still feel I don’t have all that many suggestions – here’s hoping that changes soon. I have not, as you’ll see, included comic publishers (big or small) or traditional book presses (with one exception). This is purposeful as publishing in those arenas is quite different than in scholarly journals. If you know of other venues that regularly seek submissions, please – PLEASE – share them with us so that we can in turn share them as well. I will update this post as suggestions come in. Note: I do not mean to endorse any particular publication by including it.

Annals of Internal Medicine, Annals Graphic Medicine Series is probably the most well-known and regularly published venue for scholarly, medically themed graphic works.

CMAJ is seeking ‘graphic medicine narratives’ to be published in their Humanities section. You can find more about this in their call (if you can’t access the full article, reach out to me) and some further information can be found by searching ‘graphic medicine’ on their submission guidelines page.

AMA Journal of Ethics, who recently published an entire issue dedicated to comics and medicine, has a standing Call for Art of Medicine, including comics.

Intima is a journal focused on narrative medicine, publishing everything from poetry to comics to short fiction and beyond. Unlike the other publications included here, they do not have a standing call for submissions, rather opening it up in Spring/Fall intervals. Typical guidelines can be found here.

Hektoen International is primarily a journal of medical humanities, but they also publish works of art. To date, they have published little in the way of comics, but their submission guidelines suggest they are open to all artistic forms.

Penn State University Press, Graphic Medicine Series is worth serious consideration if you are hoping to publish a longer-form work of graphic medicine. It is certainly not the only option – I can’t include them all here – but I would I would be remiss if I didn’t include the series here, given its importance to the field.

Disclosure: There is an acknowledgement to me at the end of this video. I took part in a panel discussion about graphic medicine, hunger, and activism during this project (more on that here). I firmly believe this mural project is one piece of a larger puzzle that can help us use the arts to not only inform, but to create a greater drive to enact change. Murals or Fine Arts make us feel – where do we go with those feelings is the next step and I believe comics can fill this space.
