This Week in Graphic Medicine in a Stranger Things Stylized Font

‘This Week in Graphic Medicine’ highlights relevant articles (and tweets) about comics in medicine published during the week (Saturday – Friday). Links are typically presented without commentary, unless clarification of relevance is necessary, with credit given to those who flagged them up where possible. So without further ado…

NOTE: This week is a double-issue. The projects that followed me in my job transition, combined with developing new collections and the end-of-the-semester as an adjunct have wrecked havoc upon my schedule. I apologize for the delay and for the strain this post is likely to cause on your device!

Matthew’s Pick of the Week…

This week – or rather, these weeks – I want to highlight the launch of Bill (William) Doan’s website; sorry for not yelling like you did Bill! For those of you not familiar, Bill is the director of the School of Theatre at Penn State and brings a unique perspective to graphic medicine, combining graphic narrative and theatrical performance, most recently in projects titled Drifting and My Anxiety. His work has appeared in the Annals of Graphic Medicine more often (I believe) than any other creator to date and each work is always enlightening and brimming with emotion. He has also begun “drawing the research”, mixing his unique artistic style with anatomy – making the physiology of anxiety visible, if you will. An example of this can be found in the Tweet embedded below. You can also follow Bill on Twitter at @doanwjd1.

These are mostly pre-health students w/no performance training &even less theater exposure, discovering ways to listen to &tell stories abt illness that resist the drive to “cure” &exploring theatrical ways to represent time &embodied experience. #hhc2018

Something we really need for #medlibs and #GraphicMedicine is examples of comics in *hospital* settings. Particularly ways to get hospital librarians involved.

I know you’re in an academic setting too, but it is what comes to mind.

We haven’t seen a great deal of discussion of superheroes in #GraphicMedicine yet. One area to consider is whether the characters themselves used outside of the comic book counts. I tend to lean to no, because it is about the medium for me, but there may be other takes.

I plan to discuss, in terms of #CancerComics, not only Captain Marvel (Kree) but also Venom, Jane Foster, The Question, DAREDEVIL’s Foggy Nelson, DR. STRANGE’s Wong, and Dennis Sykes. Also, the real-life loss of Sam Loeb.
