‘This Week in Graphic Medicine’ highlights relevant articles (and tweets) about comics in medicine published during the week (Saturday – Friday). Links are typically presented without commentary, unless clarification of relevance is necessary, with credit given to those who flagged them up where possible. So without further ado…
Matthew’s Pick of the Week…
This week I want to give a special shout-out to three of the latest library’s to launch graphic medicine collections: Northwestern Medicine Galter Health Sciences Library, UConn Health Sciences Library, and Darian (Public) Library!
For Galter Health Sciences, you’ll want to take a look at their collection launch page, Graphic Medicine in Galter’s Collections. There, you’ll find their reasoning for adding the collection, a sampling of titles available, and suggested resources for keeping up on the field – including a kind shout-out to this blog series!
Graphic medicine? Yes, it’s a thing! We now have a small but growing collection at @galterlibrary. https://t.co/pLMivKmjKt #graphicmedicine pic.twitter.com/VjY3aHJZ08
— Jonathan Shank (@ShankLib) May 17, 2018
For UConn, the librarian spearheading the effort – @richmcintyrejr – has shared some great images on Twitter that I’ll share with you here!

With the help of my colleagues, I got THE BAD DOCTOR (@TheBadDr) advertised on the giant screen in the hospital lobby. #GraphicMedicine pic.twitter.com/1xgla29Bed
— Rich (@richmcintyrejr) May 14, 2018
Finally, for Darian, you’ll want to thank librarian @b_netherton for making their growing collection happen! You can see their current holdings on this list and keep an eye out for more promotions Brittany says – including at their book fair!
Are you a librarian with a graphic medicine collection? Are you a patron making use of one? Let me know about it! I have a woefully out-of-date list of libraries with graphic medicine collections and I’d love to get it updated – and include you on it.
You may also want to check out the Twitterverse for conversations during Toronto Comic Arts Fest and the Canadian Society for the Study of Comics Conference. Both are full of comic goodness and both had at least some conversation around graphic medicine!

Recently, I’ve spent time trying to better characterise some ‘enjoyable’ emotions. Doing this has helped me remember what these emotions feel like, which is comforting because often I feel like I can’t connect with them. Is this your experience too?
